Big Poplar Forestry Project
Improved Forest Management·West Virginia, United States
About this review
The Big Poplar Forestry Project is an Improved Forest Management (IFM) initiative under the American Carbon Registry (ACR) Improved Forest Management on Non-Federal U.S. Forestlands v2.1 protocol. Developed collaboratively by Aurora Sustainable Lands LLC (“Aurora”) and Anew Climate LLC (“Anew”), Aurora is among the largest private landowners in the U.S., managing approximately 1.7 million acres (0.69 million hectares) nationwide. Within the Big Poplar project, about 37,500 hectares of forestland have been enrolled in West Virginia, including a small parcel in Virginia. The project commenced on April 13, 2022, initially following v2.0 of ACR’s IFM protocol before transitioning to v2.1 in 2025, which will initiate the second monitoring period. The initial crediting period spans 20 years, with the possibility of extending for an additional 20 years, resulting in a total durability period of 40 years.
