Improved Forest Management·West Virginia / Virginia, USA
About this review
The Big Poplar Forestry Project is an Improved Forest Management (IFM) project under the American Carbon Registry (ACR) Improved Forest Management on Non-Federal U.S. Forestlands v2.1 protocol. It was developed in partnership between Aurora Sustainable Lands LLC (”Aurora”), the project proponent, and Anew Climate LLC (”Anew”), the project developer. Aurora is one of the largest private landowners in the United States, owning approximately 1.7 million acres (0.69 million hectares) throughout the country. They have enrolled approximately 37,500 hectares of forestland in West Virginia, including one relatively small parcel in Virginia, into the Big Poplar project. The project started on April 13, 2022 and was initially implemented under v2.0 of ACR’s IFM protocol before transitioning to v2.1 in 2025 for the start of the second monitoring period. The initial crediting period is 20 years with the option to extend for another 20 year crediting period, and the total durability period is 40 years.
